Swimteam

The SWIMKids USA Swim Team will afford your child the opportunity todevelop resolve, perseverance, sportsmanship and commitment. The Swim Team Coaches, headed by Bryce Whitehead, focus on each child's individualneeds and abilities in a non-competitive environment. While learning the skills necessary for higher-level competitive swim teams swimming, Your childwill be in competition with one person and one person only, and that's the athlete he knows that he can become. Workouts will provide physical conditioning and motor development patterning that will set your child apart from his/her peers.

SWIMKids USA Swim Team Mission

The SWIMkids USA Swim Teams mission is to develop and foster excellence both in and outside the swimming pool. Participation in the SWIMKids USA Swimming Team will encourage young athletes to achieve success in the pool and in life by dedicating themselves to attaining an achievable goal, persisting when the "going gets rough" and by overcoming obstacles that may block their way. This philosophy will be an excellent catalyst to competitive success in the future and a vehicle to good health habits that can last a lifetime.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can my child become a member of the SWIMkids USA Swim Team?

  • First, graduate from the Stroke Development Program (Bronze through Gold Competitive Levels). By the time your child graduates they will be proficient in all four of the competitive strokes; Freestyle, Butterfly, Breaststroke, and Backstroke.
  • Second, join the SWIMkids USA Rookie Team. Rookie Team swimmers will learn to perform starts, turns, and finishes along with improving their fitness.
  • Third, move up to SWIMkids USA Swim Team.On SWIMkids USA Swim Team your child will have the opportunity it raise their commitment level under the compassionate guidance of our coaches.

Does my child get to compete?

  • Absolutely!Starting in the Stroke Development levels, your child will have the opportunity to be introduced to kid-friendly competition.Every child earns a ribbon and has the opportunity to learn from their experience at the meets.

When are practices?

  • Stroke Development Levels are offered throughout the week at the SWIMkids USA facility.
  • Rookie Team practices are offered throughout the week at the SWIMkids USA facility.

Is there another level after SWIMkids USA Swim Team?

Yes, there is Desert Thunder Aquatic Club. Desert Thunder Aquatic Club is part of USA Swimming, which organizes our national and international teams, including the Olympic team. Your SWIMkids USA Swim Team coaches will be able to direct you to the Desert Thunder Aquatic Club coaches.

Brandon Whitehead

Brandon Whitehead
Brandon joined the family business and has been teaching for SWIMkids USA for 15 plus years. He graduated from nursing school at Mesa Community College and is a Certified Nursing Assistant. He is a  certified swim coach from the USA Swim School Association. He also holds certification from American Red Cross for CPR and as a Lifeguard.

Bryce Whitehead

Bryce Whitehead | Head Coach
Bryce Whitehead grew up at SWIMkids USA, his family's business.He began swimming at three weeks old and swam competitively for USA Swimming and in high school.He began working at SWIMkids USA in 1997 and currently works as a Swim Instructor, Coach, and Deck Manager. He says that working with "children makes my day so much better.They always make me laugh!"

He served on a church mission in Peru 2004-2006.He is currently attending Arizona State University in general studies.In his free time, he enjoys going to the gym, scuba diving, and watching ESPN.

Chet Lake

Chet Lake
Chet Lake joined SWIMkids USA in 2008.He served on a church mission to El Savador where he learned Spanish.He is currently working on his computer science degree from Mesa Community College.He enjoys working with children because they are so funny and so much fun."Their innocence and purity are very refreshing in the world that we live in." He enjoys teaching children how to be safe in the water and seeing them learn, grow, and succeed."These kids amaze me everyday." He comes from a family of four children.In his free time, he enjoys exercising and sports.

Chris Olkowski

Chris Olkowski
Chris has been an aquatics instructor for 9 years and has been with SWIMkids USA since 2001. He competed in track and field for 3 years at the collegiate level and graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in Business Advertising. At the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts, Chris completed 2000 hours and is a certified yoga instructor. He joined the gymnastic staff in February 2007.

Jesse Dickerson

Jesse Dickerson
Jesse Dickerson grew up in the small town of Cliff in New Mexico. He worked as a lifeguard at Western New Mexico University and at Silver City Country Club.He served a church mission in the Dominican Republic for two years and then worked in Puerto Rico for six months.He joined SWIMkids USA in 2004 and currently works as the Facilities Manager, and as a Deck Manager and Swim Instructor.He believes that swimming is the best activity for children’s overall development.He married his long-time friend Lindsay last year.In his free time, he enjoys fishing and boating.
